Secretary of State Marco Rubio has ordered consular officials to deny visas to transgender applicants and their families under a directive claiming gender identity treatments are part of 'child trafficking operations'. The directive states any individual seeking a visa who 'might be transgender' must be scrutinized under elevated human trafficking concerns. This directly impacts transgender travelers as well as families with transgender children, many of whom are currently being denied visas. LGBTQ+ advocacy groups are reporting a drastic increase in visa denials since March 1, 2025.
Germany Issues Warning for Transgender & Nonbinary People Traveling to the US
The AdvocateADVISORY
The German government has issued an official warning for transgender and nonbinary citizens planning travel to the United States. A German official confirmed to The Advocate that 'transgender and nonbinary individuals traveling from Germany to the United States should contact the responsible U.S. authorities prior to travel to the U.S. to inquire about current entry regulations.' This advisory follows the Trump administration's recent executive order mandating that all government-issued documents, including passports, reflect only an individual's sex assigned at birth. The State Department has instructed consular officers to flag visa applications where there is 'reasonable suspicion' that an applicant is transgender, which critics say effectively bans transgender visa holders from entry.
