People have the right to privacy. Protecting people from harmful and unwanted experiences online includes how their personal information is treated—how it’s collected, used, and shared. Expectations of what’s considered private and personal and what constitutes a violation of privacy can vary across individuals, cultures, and jurisdictions. Trust and safety professionals are often responsible for ensuring privacy violations are identifiable, reportable, and resolvable. T&S professionals are also faced with both the challenge and opportunity to assess and facilitate the right balance between individual user rights and other interests, such as that of an organization or the general public.
The aim of this chapter is to equip current and aspiring trust and safety professionals to better tackle privacy issues that arise in their line of work, encourage open knowledge sharing and discussion, and foster a culture of privacy in T&S.
In this chapter, readers will learn about:
- Policy development, including privacy definitions and considerations
- Policy enforcement, including detection, prevention, and common privacy enforcement scenarios
- Privacy governance, including organizational approaches
- Data privacy best practices, including transparency and control, privacy by design, and more
